Ufam holds a debate on moral and sexual harassment at universities in reference to Women’s Day

The meeting is free and open to the public, and will take place this Thursday (7), from 8am to 6pm

Manaus (AM) – The event ‘Knowing to Resist, Exist and Live’, on Thursday (7), will promote reflections on the topic of violence against women within the university environment and in marital relationships, in reference to International Women’s Day. The meeting will bring together experts from different areas, will be free and open to the public, and will take place from 8am to 6pm. Those interested in participating must register using the form.

The program takes place in the Rio Solimões auditorium of the Institute of Philosophy, Human and Social Sciences (IFCHS), on the campus of the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), located on Avenida Roberto Vieira, Coroado neighborhood.

The event is organized by the Study, Research and Social Observatory Group: Gender, Politics and Power (Gepos), linked to Ufam and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). The program includes lectures, conversation circles, debates, raffles and the screening of the documentary “Dona Maria, where is your poetry?”.

“Our objective is to sensitize women to become critically aware of the problems they face in their work, study and private life environments, in order to encourage them in the process of struggle and resistance against the structural oppressions that violate their their bodies, their souls and their civil, social and political rights”,

explains the leader of Gepos and one of the event’s speakers, professor Dr. Iraildes Caldas Torres.

“We invite all women from Manaus and surrounding cities to participate in our event. It will be a moment of reflection on violence against women and through its expressions in the university environment represented by moral and sexual harassment, and also, within the scope of their marital relationships, bringing a reflection on the myth of romantic love and its relationship with male domination”, adds the MSc. Sofia Oliveira, one of the event mediators.

Schedule

The debates begin at 8:30 am with the opening panel composed of the rector of Ufam, Dr. Sylvio Puga, the leader of Gepos, Dr. Iraildes Caldas Torres, the winner of the Best Dissertation award at PPGSS in 2019, master Keliene Ferreira dos Santos, and Florismar Ferreira, representative of the Manaus Women’s Forum.

At 9:30 am, the main conference will take place with the theme “Moral and sexual harassment in the university environment”, given by Dr. Iraildes Caldas Torres. Then, master Rayane de Oliveira Viana addresses “Sexual harassment as an expression of violence against women”. The prof. Dr. Ronaldo Bastos, from the Committee to Combat Moral Harassment at Ufam (Cecam), will speak about welcoming and confronting sexual and moral harassment at the university. The morning ends with a debate mediated by prof. Dr. Adson Bulhões.

From 1pm onwards, the documentary “Dona Maria, where is your poetry?” will be shown. At 2pm, it’s time for a conversation on “Symbolic violence against women and the idea of ​​romantic love”, with the participation of professor MSc. Elisiane Andrade with the theme “Symbolic violence against women”; Prof. Dr. Alice Ponce de Leão, who will address “Violent maritalities and the myth of romantic love”; and master’s student Gabriel Machado, with the theme “Is new ways of loving possible?”. After the circle, there will be a debate mediated by the MSc professor. Sofia Oliveira and master’s student Paula Litaiff.
