O twitter informed, this Monday (17), that it will show a warning when the platform reduces the reach of some content for violation of rules against “hate speech”. The alert, which will begin to appear shortly, is intended to provide more transparency to the actions of the social network in relation to the content published by users. The platform, however, did not report what is classified as “hate speech”, which may give rise to arbitrariness.

Twitter reported that the social network is based on freedom of expression, but not freedom of reach. “Restricting the reach of tweets, or viewability filtering, is a measure that allows us to move beyond the ‘leave versus remove’ binary approach to content moderation. However, like other social networks, we have historically not been transparent when we take this action,” the company wrote.

Users who feel that the platform has incorrectly limited the visibility of publications will be able to send comments to the company. “We are working to allow plaintiffs to appeal our decision.” The social network highlighted that it remains committed to Twitter being a safe environment for conversations, but that it will continue to remove content that it deems illegal.
