Twitter brands BBC and VOA as ‘government-funded media’ – 4/9/2023 – Nelson de Sá

Twitter has adopted a label to designate western vehicles like the British one BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation, reproduced below) and the American fly (Voice of America) and NPR (National Public Radio): “government-funded media”.

Similar western vehicles such as the German Deutsche Welle and the French RFIhave not yet been tagged with the new expression.

Until then, the BBC, VOA and NPR accounts did not carry labels, a policy adopted in the previous management of the platform and which focused on vehicles such as the Chinese Global Times and the russian RTreferred to as “state-affiliated media”.

Also its journalists, case of the Chinese Hu Xijin. BBC, VOA and NPR journalists were not tagged with the new term.

The exchange follows the publication by a VOA journalist, Wenhao Ma, of alleged indications that Twitter had removed the sharing and recommendation limits imposed on Chinese accounts labeled by the platform.

And it coincides with the Bloomberg news that Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter and Tesla, is traveling to China this weekend and should visit the automaker’s factory in Shanghai. Reuters had advanced its request to meet Prime Minister Li Qiang.

The American businessman published a message on Twitter, in apparent reference to the escalation between the two countries, “Friendship takes work, enmity is easy”:
