By decision of Elon Musk, Twitter will remove this Saturday (1st) the verification seal, previously granted free of charge to accounts on the network. Companies and organizations, currently marked with the golden symbol, will have to pay US$ 1,000 (about R$ 5,080) to maintain the differential.

An internal social network document, obtained by The New York Times, showed, however, that the 10,000 organizations with the most followers and the 500 with the highest advertising spend will keep the golden seal at no cost.

Other smaller businesses that want to gain authority from verification will need to pay the $1,000 fee. Employees and collaborators will also be entitled to the seal, as long as the organizations bear the additional cost of BRL 261 per month for each affiliate.

The New York Times had already announced on Thursday (30), that it would not pay to keep the verified signal on Twitter. The journalistic vehicle has almost 55 million followers and is the 24th most followed profile in the world.

Personal accounts that want to keep the blue verification badge will also need to pay to keep it. These users will need to subscribe to Twitter Blue, with a monthly fee starting at R$42, and go through the eligibility requirements, such as having a name and photo, confirmed cell phone number and being active on the social network for the last 30 days.

Before Musk took over Twitter at the end of October, verification badges were distributed at no cost as a way to attest to the authenticity of profiles of notable and publicly relevant individuals and organizations, such as politicians, celebrities, academics and media outlets. . Verification also drives more account visibility and engagement.

The new rules are part of Musk’s strategy to increase the company’s sources of revenue. Since last year, he claims that Twitter is experiencing financial problems and that it needs to restructure its business model.

The report tried to contact Twitter, but the social network does not maintain a communication team in Brazil, since the purchase by Musk. The platform’s global press office email automatically replies to any message with a stool emoji.
