Musk’s posts guide networks and fuel the far right – 04/15/2024 – Forwarded Frequently

After Elon Musk’s attacks on Alexandre de Moraes last week, there was a coordination of attacks from the right on different topics, in an attempt to keep the base of opposition to the government alive on the networks at a time when former president Jair Bolsonaro faces the possibility of arrest as a result of investigations into the attempted coup d’état.

All of Musk’s movement on the X led to debate on social media over the past week. With each new post, more excitement was brought to the groups. Among the topics, freedom of expression, left-wing dictatorship in Brazil, “PT-STF consortium” and possible dependence on Starlink in difficult-to-access locations in the country were discussed.

The only issue on which left-wing groups managed to stand out was the maintenance of the arrest of Chiquinho Brazão, a deputy suspected of being one of the masterminds behind the murder of Marielle Franco. In this discussion, the left was successful in linking the support of Bolsonaro deputies to Brazão, to what they called the “militia bench”.

Last Saturday (13), after the attacks promoted by Iran on Israel, opposition politicians began to circulate messages trying to guide Lula’s impeachment for his speeches against Israel, which they classified as anti-Semitic and with the possibility of bringing war to Brazil. The impeachment agenda was already being debated on the networks after billionaire Elon Musk promoted attacks against Alexandre de Moraes on X.

Before the attacks on Saturday, an invitation for an interview between Bolsonaro and Musk circulated in the groups. What draws attention is the fact that among the images that were disseminated there was a difference in the start time of the conversation. Despite featuring Jair Bolsonaro’s user @ on social media, the images were not posted on any official channel, whether of the former president or Musk.

After the scheduled start time for the conversation, notices began to circulate among the groups saying that as a result of Iran’s attacks on Israel, the former president and the billionaire decided to postpone the interview. At the same time, false images were sent that Lula, in response to Musk, would do a live interview with Eike Batista.

Over the past week, after Lula made an indirect criticism of Musk, saying that the billionaire never produced a “stalk of grass in Brazil”, several false messages circulated in the public WhatsApp and Telegram groups analyzed by Palver. The ones that circulated the most contained a rejoinder from Musk to Lula, as if it were a G1 report, saying that “the one who promised that PT members would eat 3 times a day was Lula, not me. Let him do the planting.”

An image that resonated intensely among the groups featured different headlines from the world’s main newspapers such as the Financial Times, The Guardian, Time, The Wall Street Journal, among others, pointing out Elon Musk’s clash with Brazilian authorities. Below the montage are the words that Brazil would have been recognized abroad as a “dictatorship disguised as democracy”, despite no title mentioning this. The sentence ends by claiming that the international repercussion would have “broken the consortium’s legs”, making reference to what right-wing users call the “Lula/STF/Press consortium”.

Another widely discussed topic was the use of Starlink, one of Musk’s companies, to provide internet signal in difficult-to-access locations. The messages argue that Lula cannot win this fight, as agribusiness would depend on the service for greater productivity of agricultural machinery. Furthermore, indigenous communities would also be harmed if the service was cut by the federal government. This theme circulated only in right-wing groups.
