Cooperation aims to speed up the removal of false content to protect the electoral system
A technical cooperation agreement with the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to accelerate the process of removing websites identified as propagating fake news, was signed, this Tuesday (5), by the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes.
Previously, the process depended on a court official communicating the court’s decision to block the page. With the new agreement, the TSE will communicate the decision directly to Anatel virtually, and the agency must immediately proceed with the takedown of the website that is considered harmful to the electoral process.
The president of Anatel, Carlos Baigorri, stated that the objective of cooperation is to comply with “the decisions of the Electoral Court as quickly as possible, thus protecting the voter and the elections”.
During the signing of the agreement, Moraes also highlighted that the TSE will pay special attention to the use of artificial intelligence by “digital militias”, which, according to him, disseminate false information to interfere in the elections.
The use of AI as a large-scale electoral resource was first seen in Argentina’s presidential race this year. Thousands of images were artificially generated to favor and attack the candidacies of president-elect Javier Milei and candidate Sérgio Massa.
“What you can’t do in the real world, you can’t do in the virtual world,” said Moraes. “Prevention is not enough. Prior regulation is not enough. There is a need for severe sanctions, so that those who use artificial intelligence to distort the voter’s will and achieve power, win elections, know that, if they use this and it is proven, their registration will be revoked, their mandate will be revoked and will be ineligible. Because otherwise crime will pay”, he added.
