Tourists begin to leave the coast of SP; deaths rise to 45

The number of people killed in the tragedy of landslides on the hillsides on the north coast of São Paulo during Carnival reached 45. The update was made by the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, in an interview this morning in São Sebastião, the city where the state executive office was temporarily transferred. The municipality accounts for 44 of the 45 dead. Across the coast, there are 1,730 displaced people and 766 homeless. Of 18 people hospitalized, six are in serious condition.
Civil Defense is working on searches to find about 40 people who are still missing. In some areas, heavy machinery has yet to move to remove debris in hopes of finding survivors. The governor advised tourists who were isolated in the region to take advantage of the window of good weather and return to their cities of origin. The Rio-Santos highway was partially released at points that were previously completely obstructed between São Sebastião and Ubatuba, but there is a stop and go operation. Only the resort of Juqhey remains isolated. The Rodovia dos Tamoios is completely open to traffic.
Ship with field hospital will dock in São Sebastião
On Thursday, a Navy ship is due to dock in São Sebastião with a 300-bed field hospital to relieve the number of patients in the city. This Tuesday, the Civil Defense and the Social Fund of São Paulo (Fussp) distributed 7.5 tons of donations of humanitarian aid items obtained on the first day of the fundraising campaign. Anyone who wants to help should follow guidelines from the social fund, accessing the official Fussp website.
The Mogi-Bertioga highway (SP-098) remains closed due to a broken pipe (km 82), collapsed barrier (kms 90 and 91) and erosion (km 87). A DER team has begun work on recovering the runway, which should take two months to be partially cleared. For total reconstruction, the deadline is six months at a cost of R$ 9.4 million, according to the secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of São Paulo, Natália Resende.
