Toucans are bothered by Nunes’ comments at a meeting – 07/04/2023 – Panel

A meeting between Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and the PSDB municipal board at the São Paulo City Hall on Monday (3) caused discomfort among toucans mentioned at the meeting and who currently make up the party’s leadership.

Eduardo Leite, governor of Rio Grande do Sul and president of the PSDB, Marco Vinholi and Orlando Faria, respectively president and treasurer of the party’s state directory, were mentioned.

In his most forceful statement according to those present, Nunes said that Vinholi would be breaking an agreement by defending the party’s own candidacy in the capital.

According to the emedebist, Vinholi participated in a meeting in 2022 in which MDB, União Brasil and PSDB leaders would have decided that Edson Aparecido, an ally of Nunes, would not be Rodrigo Garcia’s (PSDB) vice-president in that year’s election, but all would support his candidacy for mayor in 2024.

Vinholi tells the Panel that the opinion has grown in the party that the PSDB should “present an option to voters in the capital”, just as there are also “opinions for possible compositions”.

“Our commitment is to a democratic debate in this sense, considering the party as a whole”, he says.

Faria says he considers it a pity that Nunes promotes “a meeting filled with criticism of PSDB leaders, even more so within the city hall”.

“Does he believe that sowing internal discord in the party will help to have our support in 2024?”, asks the treasurer. He also says that the comments about Vinholi make no sense, as he would just be echoing Eduardo Leite’s position that the party should seek its own candidacies in all capitals.

Fernando Alfredo, president of the municipal PSDB and organizer of the meeting, says that the party is committed to supporting Nunes and that he, as long as he is in the acronym, will be a guarantor of compliance with agreements.

Alfredo also says that Leite was only praised at the meeting and that he believes that the governor has led the party with “a lot of dexterity”. The strongest criticisms, according to him, were directed at Vinholi.

He adds that, in his opinion, the PSDB cannot repeat in 2024 what he calls the “mistake of 2008”, when the party launched Geraldo Alckmin (now in the PSB) to run for mayor against Gilberto Kassab (now in the PSD, then in the DEM) and was left out of the second round, composed of the then mayor, who would be re-elected, and Marta Suplicy (today without a party, then in the PT).
