The São Paulo regional group Tortura Nunca Mais criticized in a note the dismissal of the former Secretary for Children, Ariel Castro, by the Minister of Human Rights, Sílvio Almeida. Castro is the former president of the group.
As the Panel showed, Sílvio Almeida was upset for not having been informed that a meeting of the Secretariat for Children, linked to his portfolio, was agreed directly by the then holder of the position, Ariel de Castro, with the advice of the first lady, Janja Lula da Silva.
“His dismissal certainly impoverishes the performance in this sensitive area of children, although we hope that the ministry can continue to fulfill its role in defending this most fragile segment of the population”, they maintain.
The demonstration highlights that throughout his short career, Castro contributed to the mobilization in favor of Yanomami children and victims of the rains on the north coast of São Paulo. In addition, it guaranteed the holding of the 12th National Conference on Children and Adolescents, scheduled for November.
The document is signed by the president of the São Paulo regional group Paulo Sampaio, and by the executive directors Paulo Sampaio, Rose Nogueira, Vilma Amaro Vagner Cano and Rosa Cantal.
The ministry’s advisory states that the decision is due to a necessary administrative adjustment based on the objectives and strategies outlined by the Ministerial cabinet, without prejudice to respect for the professional career of the former secretary.
