Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Dias Toffoli underwent an operation to remove two hernias this Saturday (20). The procedure was successful and the minister is under observation, with no expected discharge, according to a medical report from the Vila Nova Star hospital, in the south of São Paulo.

Toffoli removed, through a robotic procedure, a direct inguinal hernia and an umbilical hernia. The first is a bulge in the groin area, usually when the intestine pushes against the abdominal wall. An umbilical hernia is also usually caused by the “escape” of part of the intestine.

The minister is treated by doctors Antônio Luiz de Vasconcellos Macedo, Ludhmilla Hajjar and Pedro Loretti. In 2022, Toffoli had removed another hiatal hernia, in the esophagus, under the care of Vasconcellos, a specialist in the field.

In 2020, Toffoli was hospitalized for drainage of an abscess and remained in hospital due to suspected Covid-19 contamination, which was later ruled out. In May 2023, he had to be hospitalized after testing positive for the coronavirus.
