The governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís, celebrated the creation of the United Nations Multi-donor Fund for Sustainable Development in the Legal Amazon. The tool will boost economic alternatives in the region and was formalized during the event “UN and Amazon: partnership for sustainable development”, held on Wednesday, 2, in Santarém (PA).
The meeting was coordinated by the United Nations (UN) in Brazil together with the Interstate Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Brazilian Legal Amazon (Consórcio da Amazônia Legal).
“The states of the Amazon are assuming a dialogued role. This fund is very welcome, but it has to consider the Amazon in its entirety, that is, its biodiversity, but also the populations, especially the most vulnerable, from a perspective of development for the Amazon. May we interfere more and more in decisions about our future. Nothing more about the Amazon without us Amazonians”, highlighted Governor Clécio Luís.
Considered preparatory for COP-30, which will be held in 2025 in the city of Belém, the event was attended by the UN Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed. Speaking at the meeting, she pointed out the need to consider young people in every project and every decision, listening to their voices, because “their future is already today”.
The Fund’s proposal is to benefit the most vulnerable population groups in the region with actions to generate sustainable economic alternatives, to protect their means and ways of life and to guarantee their physical, health, energy, climate and food security.
“The consortium allows us to join efforts and dialogue in convergence, committed to building a sustainable development model. We see the partnership with the UN as an important tool to build what we want for our region, looking at the people who live here and taking care of those who are far from access to essential goods that provide quality of life”, said the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, who chairs the Legal Amazon Consortium.
In addition to Governor Clécio Luís, the event was attended by Minister Waldez Góes (Integration and Regional Development) and Ambassador Carlos Márcio Cozendey (Secretary for Multilateral Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), as representatives of the Federal Government; from the governments of Amazonas and Roraima, from diplomatic agencies, from international organizations and from the private sector.
“I reaffirm President Lula’s commitment to regional development, reducing regional inequalities, strengthening the federative principle, listening to those at the forefront. There is a commitment to the cause of the climate, but also to the economic and sustainable development of the region. This partnership demonstrates total trust in local governments and in the society that lives here”, said Minister Waldez Góes.
