‘The prices of electricity tariffs in the Amazon are unaffordable’, highlights Clécio at the 26th Governors’ Forum – News of Brazil

On Friday, the 10th, the last day of the 26th Forum of Governors of the Legal Amazon, the governor, Clécio Luís, drew attention to the consequences that the population of Amapá could face if there was a 44% increase in energy tariffs. The adjustment was approved by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) and is scheduled to come into effect on December 13, 2023.
The 26th Forum takes place before the Conference of the Parties (COP28), in December, and focuses on public policies for socioeconomic development and environmental preservation. On the occasion, Clécio Luís highlighted that the tariff adjustment must be faced jointly by the Amazonian states, in search of alternatives.
“A very big concern is the price of energy tariffs in the Amazon, which is currently unaffordable. This does not fit into the pockets of Amazonians, those who need to preserve their food, those who want access to information and we are not going to solve this in isolation. Imagine what will happen if a state that has difficulties like Amapá, which already has an above-average tariff, which has low economic activity dynamics, faces an adjustment of 44% on average? We will certainly have a very serious social problem. We need to put our finger on this wound and pay attention to what could have effects on health and agricultural production”, highlighted the governor.
On the last day of the meeting, the Government of Amapá also reinforced cooperation agreements focusing on public safety, environmental preservation and socioeconomic development of the Legal Amazon.
About the Forum
The Interstate Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon, which has had legal status since 2019, is a joint initiative of the governors of the nine states that make up the Legal Amazon to create and boost sustainable development based on common policies and strategies.
The event also features 17 members of the Board of Directors of the Legal Amazon Consortium, 12 representatives from Legal Amazon Land Institutes and four members of the team from the Legal Amazon Interstate Consortium for Sustainable Development.
