The poison has a name: reelection – 09/30/2023 – Elio Gaspari

The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, exposed the poison that weakens national politics:
– I ask, has the institution of re-election in the Executive Branch been good for Brazil? My perception is that it was not good for the country. When you are placed in the group of leaders, everyone tends to believe that the end of re-election will be good for Brazil.
The institute for reelection to executive positions, created in 1997, has become a political anomaly. The president, governor or mayor takes over with only her in mind. Since its emergence, it has sponsored ruinous economic and health policies, reaching Jair Bolsonaro’s coup articulations.
Brazil already had ruinous institutions such as slavery, land legislation and even tax organization. All of them were born from economic interests. They benefited or benefit social classes. The re-election came out of nowhere, driven only by the interest of individuals to remain in power. Its patron, then president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, recognized, in 2020, that it was historically a mistake. Lula and Jair Bolsonaro ran against it. Sitting down in the chair, they changed their minds.
Pacheco says that the Senate is “very eager” to debate the end of re-election. It is unlikely that it will be possible to end it suddenly, but it is possible that Congress will vote on a constitutional amendment that would end re-election for presidents, governors and mayors elected from 2026 onwards.
