A 57-year-old man living in the municipality of Caraá (RS) is the 14th victim of the extratropical cyclone that hit Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina last Friday (15). There are still three other people missing, one in the northern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and two others on the coast of Santa Catarina.

The phenomenon caused damage in at least 41 cities in Rio Grande do Sul, leaving 3,700 people homeless and around 700 homeless. According to the Civil Defense, deaths were also recorded in Maquiné, São Leopoldo, Esteio, Novo Hamburgo, Gravataí, Bom Principle and São Sebastião do Caí.

The regions most affected by the extratropical cyclone in Rio Grande do Sul were the mountains and the north coast. According to the state government, the compromised road infrastructure is being evaluated and receiving emergency interventions, as well as the damaged schools.

A crisis office was set up to coordinate actions to rescue people and recover buildings affected by the phenomenon. “We are going to support people who need to refurbish their homes and also those who have lost their homes and will need new homes”, said Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) during a secretariat meeting this Monday afternoon (19).

Still according to Leite, small rural producers who lost production due to the rains will also be helped by strategic policies of facilitated credit. The Legislative Assembly of RS forwarded to the government R$ 2 million referring to the twelfth to be used in the containment of damages in the state.

In Santa Catarina, the strong winds and rains caused storm surges on the coast that caused a fishing boat with eight people to capsize in the sea. Two workers have not yet been located.
