The city of São Paulo had the hottest day of December in 25 years this Friday (29). The Mirante de Santana meteorological station, in the north of the capital, recorded a maximum of 34.9°C.

It was the second highest temperature for the period, second only to December 3, 1998 (another El Niño year), when the index reached 35.6°C.

The historical data series from Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology), the body responsible for the measurements, begins in 1961. The station is a reference for meteorology in the state and has been operating since 1945.

Two other days from this last month appear in the ranking of the ten hottest for the month of December in the capital of São Paulo: the 3rd, when the thermometer reached 34.6°C, and the 7th, which reached the mark of 34. 5°C.

Historically, considering all months, the highest temperature recorded at Mirante de Santana is October 2014, with 37.8°C.

With the addition of global warming to the occurrence of El Niño, 2023 can now be considered the hottest in the last 125 thousand years.

Even though the December numbers have not yet been consolidated, data from the European Copernicus observatory indicate that the first three weeks of the month had temperatures around 1°C above the historical average for the period.

This comes after a scorching year: from June to November, every month broke the heat record for that time of year — and July was the hottest month in Earth’s recent history, being approximately 1.5°C above pre-war levels. -industrial (1850-1900).

In the first 11 months of 2023, the global average temperature was the highest ever recorded: 1.46°C above the pre-industrial average, and 0.13°C above the average for the period in 2016, which was the hottest year so far.

The hottest day of the year in São Paulo was November 13, when thermometers registered 37.7°C. At the time, Brazil was experiencing the eighth of a total of nine heat waves recorded in Brazil in 2023.
