Arrested for attempted bomb attack in Brasilia, George Washington spoke about coup

The terrorist George Washington, arrested for trying to promote a bomb attack near Brasília Airport, wrote five messages to the Army asking and offering to help in a military coup, including the arsenal he kept in his home. The interactions took place on December 11 of last year, the eve of the attacks against the headquarters of the Federal Police. Sought by the column, the Army said it was unable to cope with the volume of messages it receives.

The Civil Police of the Federal District discovered the attempt at communication by examining George Washington’s cell phone. In the first message, the terrorist wrote a distress call to the Armed Forces: “SOS FFAA”.

Hours later, George Washington shared a news item from a left-wing blog with the headline: “PT, unions, MST and MTST will form a parallel security force for Lula in office”.

“Convoke the CACs. Gentlemen, how long will you wait? Summon and put in intensive military training”he wrote next, in reference to Collectors, Sport Shooters and Hunters (CACs). “He has a lot of rifles at his disposal, it will be an honor to serve the country. Don’t let us go off like bad guys in this situation.”

George Washington told the Federal Police that he spent more than R$160,000 on ammunition and weapons, including a .308 Springfield rifle. “Be quick, train the CACs. Don’t wait for things to get more serious.”read the final message.

Similar messages were sent to federal deputy General Eliéser Girão, from the PL of Rio Grande do Norte, and to senator Eduardo Girão, from Novo do Ceará. George Washington asked the deputy that the CACs be triggered for a coup, claimed to have many rifles and made an appeal: “Don’t let us go out like bandits.” For the senator, the terrorist said he had many “sniper shooters” among the CACs, who could act as “reserve force”.

Investigations showed that George Washington tried to take a sniper course, but failed. Justice Minister Flávio Dino declared that the terrorist had the intention of killing Lula during the presidential inauguration.

Message that terrorist George Washington sent to the Army’s official Instagram profile

The column sought out the Army to find out whether the Force was aware of the five messages and whether there is an intelligence system to monitor the content of texts received on Instagram. In a note, the Army reported that it began to receive a daily average of 200,000 interactions on social networks, between November and December 2022, and that it was not possible to identify the aforementioned messages.

“Previously, that average was around 16,000 interactions per day”declared the Army. “It should be noted that the Brazilian Army remains at the disposal of public security agencies and other competent authorities to contribute with any necessary deployment of the investigations.”

Senator Eduardo Girão said he has “a firm and public position against the broad easing of CACs and the carrying of firearms that took place in the Bolsonaro government”. Regarding George Washington’s messages, Girão said that one of the Civil Police delegates told the CPMI on 8 de Janeiro that the terrorist had sent messages to authorities’ social networks and that the profiles did not respond.

“I didn’t know they had also made it to my Instagram. I didn’t see it or reply, because I have more than 260,000 followers on this social network alone. I receive thousands of messages daily, since I post at least four publications a day”

he declared.

Deputy General Eliéser Girão said that he does not know George Washington and that he has not seen any message of this nature.
