Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia’s campaign at the Australian Open has come to an end. Early this Friday morning (19), the Brazilian was eliminated by Maria Timofeeva in the third phase. The match ended in 2 sets, 0 (7/6) and (6/3) for the Russian.
The young woman, just 20 years old, is number 170 in the WTA rankings and went through three qualifiers to reach the main stage. In the round of 16, she will face world number 37, Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk.
The match started with Bia Haddad opening 3/0 with a break. But Timofeeva recovered afterwards, also won three games in a row and left everything the same. They maintained service until 6/6. In the decisive game, the Brazilian reached 4/1 and then 5/3. The Russian recovered and closed at 9/7.
The second set started with dominance from Timofeeva, who broke a serve and took a 3/0 lead. Shortly after, she reached 5/1 and took the win. Bia Haddad showed power of reaction and brought the score to 5/3. However, in the ninth game, the Russian kept her serve and closed at 6/3.
The result, however, guaranteed some important achievements for Bia Haddad. It was her first time in the third round of the singles tournament at the first Grand Slam of the season.
More than that, she was the first Brazilian to reach the third game in the Open Era. Brazil’s best result at the Australian Open is Maria Esther Bueno’s runner-up finish in 1965.
The São Paulo native still has at least one more challenge in Melbourne. Playing with American Taylor Townsend, Bia Haddad will face Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Russian Anna Blinkova in the second round of the women’s doubles. The confrontation should also take place this Friday (19).
