Telehealth points in Amazonas communities receive Starlink technology

Action allows faster and more reliable access to telehealth services
Manaus (AM) – The telehealth project in riverside communities in the Amazon, carried out by the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS) in partnership with the French Embassy, will be reinforced with the adoption of Starlink internet technology. Starting in November, three connectivity points, which have their own photovoltaic energy generation, will receive the installation of Starlink equipment, which will allow faster and more reliable access to telehealth services.
The initiative will benefit residents of the communities Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro and Terra Preta, located in the Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), and Betel, located in the Lago do Piranha RDS. These communities already receive care via telehealth, in the nursing and psychology specialties. Until September this year, the project totaled 219 telephone services in the three communities.
According to FAS, the adoption of Starlink will bring a series of technical advantages that will further qualify remote health care for riverside communities, as the system uses a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, making it ideal for providing connectivity in rural and remote areas where terrestrial infrastructure is limited. Furthermore, it offers high-speed broadband, with smoother and more natural real-time interactions, being a reliable and scalable system, with the added benefit of data security and mobility. This technology helps overcome connectivity challenges by ensuring reliable and fast access to telehealth services.
Health promotion
Telehealth care is possible thanks to the connectivity points installed by the FAS and the French Embassy in the communities, which allow tele-guidance and tele-services. In this way, riverside dwellers in remote areas no longer need to travel long distances to access health services.

Among the achievements of the initiative is the fact that we are able to provide and mediate care for pregnant women who will have access to prenatal care for the first time; these patients’ access to psychological care; reducing the risk of serious illnesses and other injuries. In this way, we support the strengthening of the SUS, enabling quality health care for those who need it most”,

To reach people who need care, the telehealth project has the support of community health agents (CHA) who actively search the communities. Residents’ demands are passed on to the telehealth team, which welcomes and triages the patient. The patient is then referred to teleservice, where they consult with a healthcare professional.
The French Embassy in Brazil has supported FAS actions since 2021. “We are especially proud to participate in this telehealth project, a fundamental area. This support is part of the French cooperation policy in the Amazon, which addresses both the environmental and human perspectives”, highlights the technical cooperation attaché at the French Embassy, Julie Maraval.
FAS coordinates with the municipal health departments at each point to offer professionals for care and to provide clinical examinations as needed.
