Professors from universities, technological education centers and federal institutes from the five regions of Brazil decided to go on strike from Monday (15). The category requires a salary adjustment of 22%, to be divided into three equal installments of 7.06% — the first for this year and others for 2025 and 2026.

Andes-SN (National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions) states that, in addition to salary recovery, there is a need for public investments in federal education institutions, given the erosion of these investments in the last government, under Jair Bolsonaro (PL) .

“We need a reorganization of teachers’ careers and a major repeal of restrictive rights measures, of a regressive nature, that were implemented in recent years, of a social security nature, which took away rights and directly affect retirement, measures that inhibit the exercise of the right to strike, among many others”, said Gustavo Seferian, president of Andes and law professor at UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais).

According to the union’s overview, three institutions linked to the entity have already halted their activities. On Monday, another 17 will go on strike. Five announced strike indications (with a strike forecast) and eight are in a state of strike (warning that they may go on strike).

In a note, the MEC (Ministry of Education) informed that the department’s teams have been participating in the national negotiation table, in the specific tables of technicians and teachers established by the MGI (Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services) and in the sectoral table that deals with working conditions.

“The MEC has been making every effort to seek alternatives for valuing education employees, paying attention to frank and respectful dialogue with the categories. Last year, the federal government promoted a 9% adjustment for all employees”, says the text of the Lula government (PT).

In addition to the 69 universities, the Federal Network of Professional and Technological Education is made up of institutes, Cefets (Federal Centers for Technological Education, in RJ and MG), technical schools linked to universities, Colégio Pedro 2º and UTFPR (Federal Technological University from Paraná).

The teachers join the movement started by technical-administrative education employees on March 11, with the participation of workers from 50 universities and four institutes. The category calls for the restructuring of the career plan for technical-administrative positions in education, including salary adjustment.

Andifes, which represents leaders of 69 universities and two technological education centers, states that “strike is a constitutional right guaranteed to workers and union sections and employees have autonomy to decide on participation in the movement.”
