Teachers and staff strike: almost 300 campuses of federal institutes are without classes

Workers demand career restructuring, salary and budget adjustment, and revocation of standards approved by the Temer and Bolsonaro governments. The student category is divided between supporting the movement or not. Federal Institute of Mato Grosso (IFMT), one of those who joined the strike IFMT/Disclosure Teachers and technical-administrative employees from almost 300 campuses of federal institutes are on strike this Monday (8), with no return to normal activities expected. The strike began, in most units, on April 3. 📝 *Campi is the plural of campus. From Latin, campus means land and buildings of a university or other school. Although campus is the plural recommended by the Portuguese Spelling Vocabulary (Volp), the Portuguese version campus is also already used by federal institutions. Also joining the movement were: Colégio Pedro II, the National Institute of Education for the Deaf, the Benjamin Constant Institute and Cefet-RJ, in Rio de Janeiro, as well as federal schools and colleges linked to the Ministry of Defense. According to Sisasefe (the national union that represents civil servants), all students at these institutions are without classes. ➡️What are the workers’ demands? The strikers demand: career restructuring; salary recovery; revocation of standards related to education that were approved under the Temer (2016-2018) and Bolsonaro (2019-2022) governments, such as the new secondary education; reinforcement of the budget of educational institutions and immediate readjustment of student aid. ➡️What does the government say? The Ministry of Management states that it made possible, in 2023, a linear adjustment of 9% in civil servants’ salaries and 43.6% in food allowance. According to the ministry, it was the first agreement signed with the categories in the last 8 years. For 2024, the government says it presented a proposal to: increase food aid from R$658 to R$1,000; increase health care resources by 51%; increase the daycare allowance from R$321 to R$489.90. These items are being debated with educational entities at specific tables, according to what the Ministry of Management told g1. A final report with the career restructuring plan will be presented on March 27th to Minister Esther Dweck. Sisasefe confirms that the unions’ dialogue with the federal government began in June 2023, but “the government has not shown a compatible response to the category’s demands so far.” “From the meeting on 12/18/2023, the federal employees of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education began to debate the possibility of building a strike — which was approved on 03/27 and began on 04/03”, states the workers entity. ➡️Is there an expected return to activities?
