Teacher training and teacher appreciation will be the priority topics in education within the scope of the G20, according to the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana. The minister is in India, where he participated in the G20 Education Ministers’ Meeting, in Pune.

Starting next year, Brazil will assume the presidency of the G20 – a group formed by the 19 largest economies in the world and the European Union -, and the Ministry of Education (MEC) will be at the head of the Working Group (GT) on Education.

At the ministerial meeting, Santana presented the initial proposals for next year’s educational debate.

“In education, we have established teacher training and teacher appreciation as priority topics for next year, recognizing the importance of the teacher in the students’ trajectory and, consequently, in the quality of education”,

said Santana.

In addition to teacher training, other priority topics for Brazilian management will be the community engagement of schools, with respect for differences and fostering interaction between the teaching-learning environment and society and the sharing of educational content between teaching platforms, with emphasis on education for sustainable development, in the context of the environmental agenda.

“The idea is to train our young people for forms of development that are non-predatory, non-polluting”,

he said.

The meeting of ministers, which ended yesterday (22), was attended by more than 150 delegates, including 14 ministers from the G20 member countries and guests.

Santana also proposed to the group the creation of the G20 Educational Award. “I also took, as a suggestion, given the prestige and capillarity of the G20, an Educational G20 award that recognizes successful local experiences and allows us, through them, to deepen the debate on the implementation of community engagement measures”,

explained.

Brazil in the Presidency of the G20

The Group of 20 (G20) is made up of 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom and United States, in addition to the European Union. G20 members represent about 85% of the global GDP (Gross Domestic Product, sum of all goods and services produced by a country), more than 75% of global trade and about two-thirds of the world’s population.

Since 2008, countries take turns in the presidency. This will be the first time that Brazil will chair the G20 in the current format. The G20 presidency’s schedule will comprise more than a hundred official meetings throughout the national territory, including the Leaders’ Summit, around 20 ministerial meetings, more than 50 meetings of senior officials, in addition to dozens of parallel events.

The G20 Leaders Summit, during the Brazilian presidency, is scheduled for November 18 and 19, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro. The Presidency of the Republic of Brazil indicated three general guiding challenges for all G20 working groups in 2024: sustainable development, reform of global governance structures and combating inequalities.

Education Agenda

In education, the next ministerial meeting of the G20 is scheduled for September this year, in Fortaleza. On December 1st, the MEC should publish a technical note that will detail the priorities and expected objectives of the WG. Then, the folder proposes a videoconference, to be held from February 5 to 6, 2024, to listen and receive contributions from countries.

The first face-to-face meeting will take place from March 25 to 27, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro. At the end of April, the MEC intends to share the first version of the ministerial declaration. The second face-to-face meeting will be held from May 20 to 22, in Brasília. Next, the intention is to prepare the revision of the declaration through virtual conferences with each country.
