TCU: Dilma did not return R$ 4,800 in Presidency items – 03/20/2023 – Power

Former President Dilma Rousseff (PT) did not return six goods received at ceremonies in Brazil and abroad that would belong to the Presidency. Together, the objects are worth R$ 4,873.

The information was collected by CNN and confirmed by UOL based on data from the TCU (Tribunal de Contas da União).

In 2016, Justice questioned where were 144 assets that Dilma received between 2011 and 2016, so that they could be returned to the Union’s assets. Three years later, the Presidency of the Republic reported that all but six objects had been found.

In 2020, TCU ministers agreed not to charge the return, as the value was low.

According to the final report, the items that were missing were:

  1. Hamaca hammock by Tejido Larense;
  2. Wooden platter from the manufacturer Muskoka;
  3. Table clock with circular case in stainless steel, from the manufacturer Val Saint Lambert;
  4. Table clock set on a wooden stand with pen holder (does not specify type);
  5. Tapestry panel (measuring 162.5 x 110 cm) showing a man playing a musical instrument, by the artist J. Fortes;
  6. Fabric painting (measuring 88x68cm) depicting a black woman with a pot on her head and a child on her back, with the inscription “Povo Hereiro” on the back;

UOL tries to contact Dilma. If there is a response, the text will be updated.

Bolsonaro government tried to bring millionaire jewels from Saudi Arabia

The government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) brought two sets of jewelry from the famous Chopard brand, studded with diamonds, from a trip to Saudi Arabia. The entourage, made up of former minister Bento Albuquerque and advisors, did not declare those present to the Federal Revenue Service.

A set of jewelery worth nearly R$17 million was seized, and several members of the former government tried to get it back. A second set of jewels, with no estimated value, managed to enter the country and reached Bolsonaro. Among the items are a watch, a ring and a pen.

The cheapest watch available on the Chopard website costs 6,060 Swiss francs, equivalent to R$ 33,600.

The government could have received the jewelry as an official gift. In that case, however, the assets would remain with the State, and not with the Bolsonaro family. The Revenue did not register any request from the government to incorporate the pieces into the presidential collection.

The alleged resistance of the Bolsonaro government to declaring jewelry and watches a public good directly contradicts the understanding established by the TCU in 2016.

At the time, the court filled a legal vacuum on the subject, which even resulted in the return to the common heritage of the Presidency of about 500 gifts that were in the private collections of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Dilma.
