Tarso Genro says that economy and war will define evangelical support for Lula

Former minister Tarso Genro (PT-RS) stated that the economic scenario and the government’s actions towards the outcome of the conflict between Israel and Hamas will be crucial for possible support from evangelicals for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and others sectors that did not embark on the PT campaign in 2022. Gen-in-law has already served as minister of Education, Institutional Relations and Justice in Lula’s first terms, in addition to being governor of Rio Grande Sul.

“Whatever comes of this war, for better or for worse, the rulers will be remembered. What did they do about the war? We are a peaceful continent when it comes to international relations… It will also depend on the economy’s reaction next year”, he said in an interview with the newspaper The globe released this Monday (6). “If these two issues flow appropriately to the government, they will have a powerful influence on the average consciousness of the Brazilian population. These will be opportunities to win back religious sectors that are available for a certain dialogue,” he added.

The former governor also said that in this new term the president needs to face the fragmentation of Congress in order to govern. “There was a profound deformation of the political system and parliamentary representation. Today, Parliament could be made up of six or seven blocks. There are separations, fragmentations. This allows new forces to be created within Congress that not only have no political experience but also have an immediate desire for power at any price,” said Genro.

For him, “Lula is managing, with these ambiguities and contradictions, to maintain the stability of a base that now has to be broken to establish a connection between the tax reform, the exemptions in various sectors and the increase in revenue for the country to be able to function this year. next”. The former minister considers that the “president guided his government around three themes in this first year: the fiscal framework, a new foreign policy and the fight against hunger and absolute poverty.”

“I would say that the issue of foreign policy is exemplary, the fight against hunger and absolute poverty is underway and that we have to untie the knot in the fiscal framework.
