The governor did not comment on the problems faced by state school teachers at the beginning of this school year, with thousands of teachers without assigned classes. But he said that they are the “greatest asset” and that they “work really hard” for education in São Paulo.

According to the Secretary of Education, Renato Feder, the delay in class assignments occurred due to changes in rules this year. As shown by Sheetthe problem has already left students without classes in the first few days due to a lack of teachers.

Feder stated that the problem will be resolved by Thursday (22) at the latest. Last week, the secretariat had already said that the issue would be resolved on Friday (16).

The problem occurred after the Tarcísio administration changed the rules for defining classes for temporary teachers (called category O), who are almost half of the total of 216 thousand teachers who work in the São Paulo network.

After ten years without hiring staff, the State Department of Education held a competition with the expectation of recruiting 15 thousand teachers. Their hiring, however, is only scheduled for 2025. For this academic year, the secretariat defined that those approved would only have priority in the assignment of classes.

With the new rule, those who were approved with the highest score in the competition received priority to choose the classes they wanted to take in 2024. In previous years, this was reserved for teachers with the longest experience in the network, that is, those with more Classroom experience.

As some of those approved with the highest scores may have positions in other education systems or schools, many did not want to take on classes as temporary teachers. Thus, several classes were not intended for a professional.

Apeoesp, the category’s main union, estimates that at least 5,000 temporary teachers are without assigned classes until this Tuesday. The secretary denied the information, but did not say how many professionals remain without defined work.

Without having assigned classes, teachers have no idea when they will receive salaries again. Around 50,000 temporary employees had their contracts terminated by the secretariat at the end of last year and no longer received their salaries in February. Many of them were hoping to get classes at the beginning of February to start receiving classes again in March.
