Tarcísio sets a goal of delivering land titles to all settlers in SP – 03/03/2024 – Panel

The Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicanos-SP) set the goal of delivering property titles to all families living in the 140 state settlements by the end of 2026.

In the first year, 1,059 families received the titles. The government’s assessment is that the process will gain traction starting this year and, at this rate, will cover the remaining 6,074 families in three years.

“There will not be a settler without a property title in the state of São Paulo by 2026”, says Guilherme Piai, Secretary of Agriculture of the state government and main person responsible for the project.

In January, the São Paulo government delivered more than a thousand land regularization titles in the region known as Pontal do Paranapanema, in the far west of São Paulo. The area is a stronghold of agrarian reform movements, especially the MST (Landless Workers Movement).

The delivery of property titles to settlers is inspired by a policy implemented for the countryside under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The model faces opposition from landless movements and left-wing parties, who see the agrarian reform process as empty.

Defenders of the practice argue that it removes settlers from the orbit of rural movements and gives them freedom to produce according to market rules.
