The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), stated that he will go to the demonstration in favor of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) scheduled for the 25th, a Sunday, on Avenida Paulista.

“It’s a peaceful demonstration in favor of [ex-] president, and I will be by his side, as I always have been,” the governor told CNN.

Elected with the support of the former president, whose minister he was, Tarcísio cultivates a relationship of friction and rapprochement with the Bolsonarist base.

Like Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), he is often asked to take a public stance in defense of the former president by Bolsonaro’s closest allies.

More recently, the governor has been pressured by Bolsonaro supporters for his friendly interaction with President Lula (PT) during an event in Santos (SP) and for not having publicly spoken out in defense of the former president after the Federal Police operation that targeted coup groups. in the government of the former president.

Bolsonaro recorded a video in which he calls supporters for the event in Paulista. The message began to be spread by allies on Sunday (12), amid the PF investigations.

In the video, Bolsonaro asks supporters not to carry banners and posters against anyone and speaks of an act of support for what he calls the “democratic state of law”. “At this event I want to defend myself against all the accusations that have been made against me in recent months,” he said.

If he is prosecuted and convicted of the crimes of attempted coup d’état, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law and criminal association, the former president could face a sentence of up to 23 years in prison and be ineligible for more than 30 years.

Bolsonaro has not yet been indicted for these crimes, but suspicions about these crimes led the Federal Police to launch an operation that targeted his allies last Thursday (8).

The former president has already been convicted by the TSE for attacks and lies about the electoral system and is the target of different other investigations at the STF (Supreme Federal Court). At this moment, he, who is 68 years old, is ineligible until at least 2030.

Throughout his term, the president’s main confrontational strategy was to question the security of electronic voting machines, a system used since 1996 and considered efficient and reliable by authorities and experts in the country.

The request now to supporters not to carry banners and posters at the event on February 25th is a strategy to avoid increasing the dispute with the STF and Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who should be the main target of the event and who presides over inquiries that could lead Bolsonaro to new convictions.

The STF was Bolsonaro’s favorite target throughout his term. He used terms such as “politicalha”, “it’s fucking over”, connection with PT, activism and militancy, in attacks that intensified from 2020, with the Covid-19 pandemic.

In previous acts, in addition to attacking the STF and Congress, Bolsonaro supporters also carried banners and posters supporting the implementation of a coup in the country, in addition to praising the military dictatorship (1964-1985).

Nostalgic for the dictatorship, Bolsonaro has reiterated over the years his authoritarian tendency and his disregard for the democratic regime. He denied the existence of a dictatorship in Brazil and said he was in favor of “a regime of exception”, stating that “through voting you will not change anything in this country”.

In 2021, for example, he implied that he could not do everything he wanted because of the democratic pillars. “Some think I can do everything. If everything had to depend on me, this wouldn’t be the regime we would be living in. And despite everything, I represent democracy in Brazil.”
