Tarcísio says he was wrong in his position on autism – 02/10/2023 – Panel

In a note released this Friday (10) on his social networks, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) said that his management was wrong to say that autism may cease to exist.

The positioning comes after the Panel showed that the Tarcísio government vetoed a bill approved in the Legislative Assembly of SP that provided for indeterminate validity to medical reports that attest to the autism spectrum disorder.

In the justification, he wrote that autism “diagnosed early up to five years and eleven months of age is changeable, being able to change both in severity and even cease to exist”, a statement contested by specialists.

“We made a mistake. It is important to clarify that the understanding of the Government of São Paulo is that the diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder is permanent and, therefore, the rights will be definitive. governor in the note.

He also said that he will improve the project that was vetoed and expand the debate on the subject.

“For this, we are going to call civil society and entities to discuss the matter with responsibility and work to advance with effective public policies”, he added.

On video, the state secretary of Health of São Paulo, Eleuses Paiva, argued in the same direction.

“Both the Secretary of Health and the Government of the State of São Paulo are clear that autism is a permanent disability and that the right of people with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) is definitive”, says Paiva in this Friday’s video.

In an interview with Sheet in September 2022, Karla Maria Nunes Ribeiro, psychiatrist and professor at UFS (Federal University of Sergipe), said that autism has no cure.

“If they say that a patient is ‘off the spectrum’, it is because the diagnosis was made wrongly. There is no such thing as ‘off the spectrum’. The child can evolve significantly and the degree of autonomy of the child may draw attention, but autism cannot be cured . We have to be careful with miraculous treatments”, he said.

Elected state deputy and activist in the area, Andréa Werner (PSB-SP) said she was concerned about the initial statement by the Health Department that autism can pass.

“Our biggest concern as mothers of autistic children is who will take care of them after we are gone. Our concern is social assistance, assisted living, inclusive, and if the state thinks that autism is something that goes away, why should it care? with social assistance?”, he added.
