The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), met this Thursday (19) with former US vice president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore, a world reference in the debate on global warming.
The meeting was requested by Tarcísio. According to him, to ask Gore if the state is “taking the right steps” and show his management’s commitment to environmental protection.
Asked by Folha if the intention was to show international actors that his government was different from that of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the environmental issue, he said that “he is not trying to show anything, but to learn”.
In 2020, also in Davos, Gore was involved in a quid pro quo with Paulo Guedes, then a colleague of Tarcísio in Bolsonaro’s ministry, after the Economy minister said that deforestation in Brazil was driven by poverty. With Tarcisio the climate was different.
“We are moved by pragmatism, I want to show results, let’s talk to those who understand a lot about this subject”, said the governor, who promises “partnerships with international organizations to analyze the impact of climate change on our projects”.
In addition to Gore, Tarcisio also met with Jennifer Morgan, Secretary of State for Germany and responsible for climate action.
