The Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicans) makes a positive assessment of the work of therapeutic communities, which are part of the state model for treating drug users, especially in cracolândia. With this diagnosis, the idea now is to open 1,000 new vacancies for the program.
From April 6 to June 17, 37.1% of people who underwent screening at the Care Hub for Crack and Other Drugs, in downtown São Paulo, were referred to therapeutic communities. The others were directed to specialized hospitals (38.9%) and halfway houses (13.2%).
The hub was inaugurated in April to replace the old Cratod (Reference Center for Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs), designed to receive especially people who frequent cracolândia.
During this period, 71.5% of those who passed through the new center consume crack and 15.1% use synthetic cannabinoids, better known as K9, K2, K12 or spice. Of the total, 61.2% were homeless.
Therapeutic communities are targets of criticism from social movements, which question the effectiveness of the model and, especially, the religious elements that are often incorporated into the treatment.
