Tarcísio defends higher salaries for PMs at military school – 03/08/2024 – Education

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) defended this Friday morning (8) that reserve military police officers receive more than teachers to work in civic-military schools. He sent a bill to Alesp (São Paulo Legislative Assembly) to create a program with the model in the state.

When asked this Friday morning about the payment of a much higher amount than what is paid to education professionals, Tarcísio minimized the impact.

“The police officers who will be summoned, there will be two or three per school to take care of discipline, civility, who will help the school staff. I know that we have an issue with the teachers and we will resolve it too, but first we need fix the state’s accounts”, said the governor.

At the end of February, Tarcísio had already recognized that teachers in the São Paulo state network need better working conditions. This year, the Republican administration did not increase the minimum salary for teachers and also did not present any proposal for improvements in career progression.

“We know that teachers don’t have the best structure or the best salaries, but they have a lot of love,” he said at the time.

Without explaining what the “state’s reckoning” would be that he hopes to do, Tarcísio said that after that he will “take great care of the education and health staff.”

The bill that creates the civic-military schools program in the state was forwarded by the government this Thursday (7) to Alesp (Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo), where it should be discussed and approved this semester. The governor’s base is already mobilized for this.

The government is betting on the approval of the project and wants to open 50 civic-military schools next year and another 50 in 2026.

In a statement, the Department of Education denied that the amount it will pay to police officers is greater than the teaching salary in the state. “The average salary paid to teachers in the network is R$6,057, according to a calculation made from the Transparency Portal”, says the ministry.

The amount paid to security officers, however, will be added to the salaries they already receive from the police reserve.

Tarcísio started to promise the model to oppose President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), when the federal government decided to end the national program to promote civic-military schools created by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

According to Tarcísio’s proposal, reserve PMs will work in these schools to take care of “school security” and develop “extracurricular activities of a civic-military nature”. To do this, they will receive a supplement of R$301.70 for each 8-hour day — with the possibility of working up to 40 hours per week.

The total amount that police officers can receive just as a supplement, as they will still continue to receive reserve pay, is 13% higher than the R$5,300 defined as the minimum salary for state school teachers working 40 hours a week.

Additional remuneration for police officers must be paid with resources from the State Department of Education.

The project does not provide an estimate of how many police officers will work in schools, nor the annual cost of the program, but the government is working with the possibility of 1 police officer for every 90 students (equivalent to three classrooms) or 120 students (equivalent to four classrooms). .
