Brazil took the podium five times this Monday (31), the first day of the Paralympic Swimming World Championship, in Manchester (England). Carol Santiago, from Pernambuco, won the first gold for the country when she won the 100-meter backstroke event, in the S12 class (low vision). The Brazilian left behind the Australian Jenna Jones, silver (1min12s27), and the Spanish Maria Delgado (1min12s65).
“I am very excited. I don’t really know what to think. I was looking forward to swimming soon, but the tests were late. Glad she got it all right. We just started the competition. The program is big. Tomorrow there’s more. Now, I need to organize myself and lower the euphoria to swim again”celebrated Carol, in a statement to the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB).
The four bronze medals were won by Cecília Araújo, class S8 (physical-motor limitation) in the 400m freestyle; Samuel Oliveira, class S5 (physical-motor impairment), in the 50m freestyle; Douglas Matera, class S12, in the 100m backstroke; and Phelipe Rodrigues, class S10 (physical-motor limitation), in the 50m freestyle.
This year’s edition runs until next Sunday (August 6), with a live broadcast on the International Olympic Committee (Paralympic Games) YouTube account. The competitions at the World Cup take place in two periods: the qualifiers are played at dawn (Brasília time), and the finals are played in the afternoon.
The competition started today (31st) with 538 athletes from 67 countries, including 29 Brazilian swimmers (15 women and 14 men). Most of the national delegation – 19 swimmers – have physical-motor impairments, five athletes are visually impaired, and the other five fall into the intellectual disability classes.
