Sweden beat Japan 2-1 and will face Spain in the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup.
In this Friday’s match (11), in Auckland, New Zealand, the Swedes advanced with goals from Amanda Ilestedt (in the 32nd minute) and Filippa Angeldahl (in the 51st minute, with a penalty). Japan scored in the end, with a goal by Honoka Hayashi (in the 87th minute).
The Japanese had a chance to score in the 31st minute, when the referee awarded a penalty after Ueki was pushed. The number 9 charged, but the ball hit the crossbar.
Japan entered the quarterfinals as the most expressive attack of the tournament, with 14 goals scored, but it was the Swedes who achieved the most expressive result of the competition so far, when they eliminated the North Americans on penalties in the round of 16.
Throughout the competition, both defenses stood out. Until this Friday’s game, Japan and Sweden had not conceded goals.
Japan, now eliminated, was the only team to have three good performances in the group stage and ended the stage with a 100% advantage.
