New sports complex with outdoor gym benefits population in Planalto neighborhood

Manaus (AM) – In order to make the capital of Amazonas a reference in sport at a world level, the City of Manaus is moving forward with the agenda for the readjustment of sports spaces in different neighborhoods and communities, such as the new sports complex built in the middle of Praça das Flores, in the Flamanal complex, neighborhood Plateau, Midwest Zone, delivered by the mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, on Thursday night (10).

On the occasion, Almeida emphasized the objective of Manaus City Hall to expand leisure areas and access to sports for the population.

“The work we are doing here in Planalto is the same as we are doing throughout the city of Manaus. This work is the answer to the wishes of the population, we are seeking in the sports area to give back small spaces like this one that may not have meaning for those who live far away from here, but for those who live here it is a significant change, and that means that people can live in community, improving their condition and quality of life”,

The project, carried out by the Municipal Secretariat of Infrastructure (Seminf), provided the community with two new sports courts: one for basketball and the other for volleyball, which is also adaptable for futsal.

Seminf readjusted the entire space of Praça das Flores, starting with the implementation of an extensive drainage network in the surroundings, to remedy the recurring flooding on rainy days.

“It is a historic moment, I came to this neighborhood when I was almost 10 years old, and looking at the reality of this place, I asked Mayor David to recover this area and make a sports complex, so this is the first basketball court from Manaus and today we are also honoring a great basketball player here in Amazonas, it is a joy to deliver this significant work to this neighborhood”,

In addition to paying attention to the square and the rainwater drainage system, the city government has in recent months intensified the actions of the “Asfalta Manaus” program in the neighborhood, which currently has more than 140 streets repaved throughout.

The space has been transformed into a sports and leisure complex. In addition to being a meeting point, residents will be able to work out at the outdoor gym, which was completely restructured. Those who practiced sports in the middle of the street now have two multi-sports courts, mounted on a metallic structure and covered, so that residents can enjoy sports activities on sunny or rainy days.

Beside the square, the residents’ dream came true: the construction of multi-sports courts, which are 16 meters long each. One court was appropriated for the practice of volleyball and futsal and the other for basketball, a modality strongly practiced by residents of the neighborhood, also with coverage, bleachers and new flooring, more resistant and with durability of colors. Both constructions follow modern engineering standards.

Retired Raquel de Oliveira, one of the residents of the neighborhood, says that the moment is one of joy. “This is a privilege for us, for over 30 years we have not seen a change like this in our neighborhood, and we can see that our neighborhood is making progress, receiving this look from the city hall, today the residents are receiving a very important gift” , said the resident.

In 1990, the resident of the Flamanal complex, Waldymar Aranha, at the time a professor of physical education at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), founded the independent team Aranha Basketball Clube Escola, with the aim of introducing children and young people from the community to the practice of sport. .

At the beginning of the project, matches took place on an improvised street with street painting done by the residents themselves. The team gained popularity in the adjacent Flamanal complexes, such as Jardim de Versalles, Campos Elíseos, Belvedere and Vista Bela, attracting more enthusiasts interested in playing basketball.

The new court will serve more than 80 people, including children from 5 years old. Access ramps and three restrooms were built in the complex, one of which is for People with Disabilities (PwDs). Praça das Flores gained lighting structure and painting and landscaping services, which gave the public space a new look.

The management’s goal is to serve at least 15 neighborhoods with renovation works for sports complexes.
