Suspect of killing 14-year-old girl in Marajó confessed to the crime

According to a statement from the Civil Police of the State of Pará, the main suspect in the murder of 14-year-old Vanessa Maia confessed to the crime. The 26-year-old man was arrested on Sunday (17), two days after Vanessa’s disappearance, in the municipality of Melgaço, in the Marajó Archipelago.
According to the Civil Police note, the accused was arrested in the act, with the support of the Military Police (PM) and other security forces, on a boat, in the rural area of Portel (PA).
“The local authorities acted quickly and efficiently in arresting the homicide suspect in Marajó, providing a quick response to the community and demonstrating the effectiveness of joint work between the security forces and the population in resolving this serious crime”, said the delegate- general of the Civil Police, Walter Resende.
According to the delegate, the accused already has a history of sexual crimes.
“He had already been arrested for another crime. Not with the victim himself that he took his life, but with another minor”, said the delegate.
Vanessa’s body was found on Sunday (17), already lifeless, at the back of an abandoned house, sunk in a well and partially covered by weeds.
According to investigations, “the victim showed signs of hanging and sexual violence, which will be confirmed after the expert report is completed.”
The police continue to investigate the case to identify whether there are others involved in the crime.
Vanessa had been missing since Friday (15), when she left home and no longer contacted her family.
After registering the disappearance, teams from firefighters, civil and military police, municipal guards and employees of the Guardianship Council were called.
