Supermarket sales registered growth of 3.09% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to a survey by the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras) released this Wednesday (24). In December last year, the sector increased by 10.73% compared to the same month in 2022.

The vice-president of Abras, Marcio Milan, assesses that the economic scenario throughout the year was favorable to the expansion of consumption.

“The lower inflation in food prices for consumption at home compared to consumption away from home was an essential factor in the growth in family consumption throughout the year”,

he emphasized.

Among other positive factors, the executive highlighted the drop in unemployment and social programs.

For the year 2024, Abras’ projection is for growth of 2.5%. According to Milan, controlling inflation is allowing consumers’ purchasing power to be restored, while the adjustment of the minimum wage above official inflation should also help boost purchases in the coming months.

“The macroeconomic scenario signals a gradual growth in consumption throughout the year following seasonality, the behavior of the main harvests, climatic factors such as excess rain, droughts and heat waves and international food demand”,

says the vice-president of the association.

There is also the effect of the payment of the PIS/Pasep salary bonus, which, according to Abras, should allocate R$28 billion to 25 million workers.
