Minister of the Environment participated in a session, this Monday (27), to explain the purpose of action by environmental entities

The Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva (Rede), was present, this Monday (27), at the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the Federal Senate to clarify the actions of environmental entities in the Amazon region, above all, when explaining functionality and return to society.

In her statement, Marina stated that she believes in the legitimacy of the NGOs and Civil Society Organizations of Public Interest (Oscips) benefiting from the Amazon Fund. The opposition from the CPI rapporteur, senator Marcio Bittar (União-AC), highlighted that five institutions, which participated in the hearing previously, received R$2.5 billion from the Fund in a short period of years.

“Just take the ruling made by the Court of Auditors when asked to investigate the fund, the fund’s projects, and gave its verdict. And he said that there is honesty, correct use and, even more so, that these organizations, with their demonstrative projects, because it cannot be otherwise, because R$ 3 billion does not solve the social problem, the economic problem, the problem of basic sanitation in Brazil”, said Marina.

The Amazon Fund, according to the minister, has private resources totaling around R$3 billion, and has demonstration projects that ensure the work carried out by organizations in the Amazon.

Senator Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM), president of the CPI, affirmed access to the report from the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU) which indicated the use of R$ 18.2 million to pay salaries and social charges from the amount of almost R$36 million to the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan).

During the session, the importance of the Amazon Fund and Brazil’s position to promote public policies to combat deforestation were highlighted in the minister’s speech. The consequence of the positive action is, according to Marina, the country’s potential to reach the Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and demand measures from developed countries for environmental and climate preservation, and mitigation.

For Marina Silva, the fight against deforestation in indigenous territories and other Amazonian regions is not limited to “command and control”, but is fundamentally linked to sustainable development and the demarcation and approval of land, especially in territories occupied by traditional peoples.
