Manaus (AM) – Public school students were featured in the unified state stage of the Amazonense Chemistry Olympiad (OAMQ). Divided into three modalities, fifteen students received 10 medals between gold and bronze, in addition to 5 honorable mentions. The competition seeks to discover young people with talent and aptitude for the study of Chemistry, stimulating scientific curiosity and encouraging them to become future professionals in the field.
The dispute, which is aimed at basic education students, is promoted annually by the Department of Chemistry and the Institute of Exact Sciences of the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam). Preparation has been taking place since the beginning of the year, as explained by Aprigio Siqueira, manager of the EE Luizinha Nascimento, located in the Praça 14 neighborhood, in the South Zone of Manaus. The college had two medalists in this edition of the OAMQ.
“These evaluations serve as a parameter for us to know if we are on the right path, therefore, we always talk to teachers and students at the beginning of the school year so that the effort is doubled. With the medals won, the feeling is of duty accomplished. We will seek more in the next edition, ”he said.
Gold medalist in modality C (for 3rd grade high school students) by EE Luizinha Nascimento, young Leonardo Mateus told about the feeling of having obtained such an expressive result in the exam.
“I always found it easy to learn Chemistry and also Mathematics, but even so I was quite surprised with the result when I learned about it. The Olympiad was held by thousands of students, so I didn’t expect to do so well. I was very happy”, declares the student.
With two medals and two honorable mentions won, EE Prof. Antônio Maurity Monteiro Coelho, located in the Coroado neighborhood, East Zone of Manaus, was also one of the units with the best results in the state education network. Professor of Chemistry at the institution, teacher Alyne Ribeiro spoke about how she tries to facilitate the learning of the subject in the students’ daily lives.
“Many students just look at the name of the subject and get scared. However, I try to demonstrate that Chemistry is in everything, whether in the human organism or in our daily processes. I try to bring the content closer to the students’ reality, so that I can show the importance of what I’m teaching”, says the teacher.
national steps
All medalist students, in modalities A (students of the 9th grade of Elementary School and 1st grade of High School) and B (2nd grade of High School), are classified to be the representatives of the State of Amazonas in the North/Northeast Chemistry Olympiad (ONNeQ) and the Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad (OBQ) Phase III for 2023.
Classified for the national phases of the dispute, medalist Samuel Barbosa, student of EE Prof Antônio Maurity Monteiro Coelho, spoke about his expectation to represent Amazonas in the next stages.
“I don’t see this responsibility as a burden, but as a gift. Now it’s time to continue studying as I’ve always done, separating a part of my day outside of school to focus even more on the contents”, says Samuel.
The tests of the unified state stage took place in October last year. In the three modalities, the Olympiad had 30 questions of multiple choices and essays, with a duration of up to 4 hours.
