Students develop functional traffic lights at school in Manaus

Manaus (AM) – 9th grade and high school students from Centro Educacional Sandra Cavalcante (CESC) participated, in the last week of the school year, in a class to develop a project for the construction of a functional traffic light. The equipment uses materials such as cardboard boxes, LEDs and the Arduino platform, an affordable and versatile tool, to create a system that controlled the LEDs that represented the colors of the traffic light.

The activity, in turn, is part of the educational robotics class program implemented by the school and developed by EduMaker Brasil, an Amazonian startup that combines education and technology and brings robotics teaching to classrooms.

On the occasion, the students had a robotics experience, associating it with electronics, innovation, creativity, organization of thoughts, teamwork and overcoming challenges. Furthermore, during the activity they had the opportunity to learn about the basic principles of electronics and programming, using Arduino. The tool allowed students to understand how programming is present in everyday objects, such as traffic lights, and how they work.

According to EduMaker founder, professor Jhony Abreu, building the traffic light not only taught theoretical concepts, but also promoted practical and collaborative skills. “Students were able to work as a team, sharing ideas and solving problems together. Furthermore, the activity developed creativity, the ability to solve problems and familiarity with technology”, points out the expert.

According to the professor, this practical experience allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge in a tangible way, connecting theory to practice in a meaningful way.

“When building the traffic light, they understood how electronic components interconnect and work together, adding contextualized and relevant learning,”

evaluates Jhony.

For CESC’s teaching director, Vanessa Drumond, the use of technology awakens creativity and values ​​and opens up a range for students to bring their ideas and put them into practice within a completely technological tool and environment. The director adds that in addition to teaching electronics and programming concepts, the experience encouraged teamwork, problem solving and practical application of the knowledge acquired. “This educational robotics experience certainly contributed significantly to the cognitive development and future skills of our students, offering a difference in their learning and positioning them in the job market”, observes Vanessa.

1st year high school student, Francisco Naja de Souza Neto, the activity of building the traffic light using the Arduino platform was fundamental, not only because the exercise within robotics classes presents technology as a learning instrument, but because it encourages understanding and its functioning in practice. “These are mechanisms that can contribute to our lives that will help in the future to create new opportunities for creating creative solutions to meet the demands and needs of the job market”, he concludes.
