The STJD applied a heavy and exemplary penalty to Santos because of the incidents that occurred against Corinthians, in Vila Belmiro, on July 21, for the Brazilian Championship. At the time, fans threw fireworks on the lawn towards the Corinthians goalkeeper Cássio and then at the players themselves, repeating scenes from 2022. As punishment, the club caught eight games behind closed doors, plus loss of command and a fine of R$ 80 thousand. Appeal is possible.
The club was indicated in paragraphs I and III of article 213 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD): ‘fail to take measures capable of preventing and repressing,’ which covers “disorder in its square.” The third paragraph emphasizes the ” throwing objects into the field of contention.”
The judgment at the 5th Disciplinary Commission of the STJD was concluded with the eight games behind closed doors and the monetary fine proclaimed, when Santos’ lawyer, Marcelo Mendes, decided to question the count, saying that the penalty should be for six games, and took an inverted one, further aggravating the situation.
The chairman of the Disciplinary Commission, Otacílio Araújo, then decided to change his designation and also defined the loss of command, meaning that the club will have to play 150 kilometers from Vila Belmiro. “So Santos was, by majority, eight games behind closed doors and losing command, beating Dr. Vanderson, who applied six games behind closed doors, and Dr. Alessandra, who applied six games behind closed doors. And, unanimously, punished with R$ 80,000 in fines, clarified?”, he said.
The game with Goiás, on Sunday (9), for the Brasileirão, remains in Vila Belmiro, but the following matches, against Botafogo, Athletico, Grêmio, Cruzeiro, Vasco and Red Bull Bragantino will have to be away from Santos. The club had already completed the first match behind closed doors against Flamengo and promises to appeal to try to reduce the penalty and, at the same time, overturn the loss of home matches to play at home.
