Brasilia DF) – The majority of ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) sentenced Thiago de Assis Mathar to 14 years in prison this Thursday (14). He is the second defendant tried for the coup acts of January 8th.

The ministers followed the vote given by the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, and understood that the defendant committed five crimes: armed criminal association, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, attempted coup d’état, damage qualified by violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed heritage.

It was also decided that the convicted person must pay jointly with others under investigation the amount of R$30 million in compensation for their participation in the depredation.

The defendant was at Palácio do Planalto, where he was arrested by the Military Police. He remains imprisoned in the Papuda prison, in the Federal District.

The understanding for conviction for the five crimes was supported by ministers Cristiano Zanin, Edson Fachin, Dias Toffoli, Cármen Lúcia, Gilmar Mendes and Rosa Weber.

Nunes Marques only recognized the conviction for the two property crimes and acquitted the accused for coup d’état and violation of the democratic State. André Mendonça and Luís Roberto Barroso were convicted of four crimes.

Thiago Mathar’s defense declared that he did not participate in the depredation of the Palácio do Planalto. According to lawyer Hery Waldir, Thiago was “demonstrating peacefully”. According to the defender’s version, he did not participate in the depredation of the Palace and entered the building to “take shelter”.
