STF reopening launches consortium to punish scammers – 02/01/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

More than an expected symbolic act in defense of democracy, the reopening ceremony of the STF was used to launch a consortium. Representatives of the court, the government, Congress and the Public Prosecutor’s Office presented in the reconstructed plenary a continued commitment to combat the coup d’état.

Officials addressing the court chose to go beyond the condemnation of the January 8 invasions. The intention was to demonstrate that there is an institutional alliance to apply punishments to a broad group of those responsible for the attacks.

Rosa Weber indicated the maintenance of a process that should go beyond those directly involved in the depredation of the headquarters of the three Powers. The president of the Supreme Court pointed out the need to punish with the rigor of the law “those who conceived it, those who practiced it, those who inspired it and those who financed it”.

The message reinforced the court’s willingness to also hold accountable political agents who fed the coup plot. In the group of those who “inflated it”, it would hardly be possible to free ex-president Jair Bolsonaro and his allies.

Lula made a point of lending institutional support to this onslaught. She expressed appreciation for what she called the STF’s “courageous and absolutely necessary decisions” (including the most controversial ones) and spoke of a joint effort to avoid “a millimeter of retreat” in the stability of democracy.

Even the restrained president of Congress, with re-election pending, joined the group. Rodrigo Pacheco declared that the attack will not be forgotten and “will produce severe consequences for those responsible”.

The production of concrete results will depend on permanent action, without concessions to pressure for agreements and amnesties. For the time being, not even the improvident Attorney General of the Republic had the courage to suggest this path. Augusto Aras listed hundreds of complaints filed against the scammers and even explained himself for his own omission in recent years.
