STF: Jurists express Lula’s ‘discomfort’ with quotes – 07/14/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The mobilization that seeks to sensitize President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to appoint a woman to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) has just gained the support of more than 60 renowned lawyers and jurists. Together, they sign a manifesto in which they report the “extreme discomfort” at seeing, once again, male names emerging as favorites for a vacancy on the highest court in the country.

“There are jurists in the country with outstanding academic production, national and international projection, working in universities and developing important works in favor of human rights and democracy. There is, therefore, no lack of worthy female names to occupy a vacancy in the STF”.

“Is there still room, in this period of history, for us to accept that the fact that men continue to fill, mostly (and with a large numerical advantage), the spaces that women have already demonstrated, abundantly, competence to occupy?” still question.

The document, which will be handed over to Lula, has drawn attention for being born in academia, which is not usually involved in the dispute for nominations to the court. Even university professors showed interest in endorsing the manifesto, but, at first, the organizers chose to gather only women.

One of the organizers is the jurist and PUC-RJ professor Gisele Cittadino, acclaimed around Lula and well liked by the president himself. She, who is also part of the Prerogativas group, was one of the first to question, legally, the arrest of the petista by determination of the then judge Sergio Moro.

At the time, the professor turned her house into a kind of ‘QG’ for studies and legal discussions around the case. In the column, Cittadino says he remembers the late nights in clear with the also jurist Carol Proner, in which they unraveled Moro’s sentence and talked to people from all over Brazil in search of an alternative for the petista.

The PUC-RJ professor says she has no interest in leaving her academic life to take a seat on the Supreme Court —and says that she has already signaled this to Lula—, but says she insists on joining the chorus that asks that a woman be chosen to replace Minister Rosa Weber in October.

“If by chance the president thinks differently and nominates a man, to put a woman [nessa vaga] it won’t be easy in the future”, says Cittadino. “So much so that until today there have only been three female ministers in the entire history of the Supreme Court. This is horrible,” he adds.

The jurist is enthusiastic when talking about three names that, in her assessment, would be excellent candidates: the prosecutor Ana Cláudia Pinho, from the Public Ministry of Pará, who is supported by the Italian jurist Luigi Ferrajoli; that of judge Simone Schreiber, from the Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region; and that of Judge Sayonara Grillo, from the Regional Labor Court of the 1st Region.

As this week’s column showed, Lula began to consider the possibility of appointing a woman to the Supreme Court. Publicly pressured by social movements, he began to collect information on possible candidates for office.
