Manaus (AM) – Bill nº 389/2023, authored by the mayor of Manaus (CMM), councilor Caio André (Podemos), which began to be discussed at the CMM last Monday (07), had a positive impact on women affected by endometriosis and subject matter experts. The construction of the proposition had the contribution of members of the Support Group for People with Endometriosis in the Amazon (Gapeam).
The legislative matter wants to institute, for municipal public servants with endometriosis, menstrual leave of three days a month, with the possibility of demanding compensation for hours not worked.
The chronic disease modifies the normal functioning of the body, causing intense cramps that interfere with carrying out common day-to-day activities and, in some cases, also cause infertility.
A member of Gapeam, architect Márcia Flávia was diagnosed with the disease just over a year ago. She says that even if the woman does the treatment properly, she still needs to live with some difficulties caused by endometriosis, and that information on the subject is essential.
“We, as women, also sympathize with other women who need this support. I myself have stopped going to my job because of my health condition. It really is an achievement”, reported Márcia.
Specialist in the treatment of endometriosis, gynecologist Liane Rogério explains that the disease affects one in 10 women, and that the cramps caused by endometriosis can be mild, moderate or severe, to the point of making the woman seek immediate medical attention.
For Liane, councilor Caio André’s project is necessary and the long-term benefit for women who suffer from severe cramps is immeasurable.
“There is a group of patients that we need to pay attention to, which is very difficult to control the pain, and they need respect from their employers, from their families, especially during the menstrual period”
explained the gynecologist.
In June 2023, the specialist participated in a Public Hearing promoted by the president of CMM, to discuss the needs of women living with endometriosis.
