Three men were arrested in Valencia and another four in Madrid
Spanish police arrested seven men on Tuesday for racist attacks against Brazilian striker Vinícius Jr.
A hate crime investigation has been opened after an inflatable doll dressed in the player’s shirt was hung from a bridge outside Real Madrid’s training centre. Next to it was a 16-metre red and white banner, the colors of rival Atlético de Madrid, saying “Madrid hates Real”.
Three men were arrested in Valencia for racist conduct at a match between Valencia and Real Madrid,
police said on Twitter.
Another four men were also arrested in the Spanish capital, police said, three of whom were
members of “a radical group of supporters of a club in Madrid”, who had already been classified as “high risk” to help curb violence during games.
The arrests come a day after the head of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, said the country’s football has a racism problem, following a racial crime complaint filed by Real Madrid.
After racist insults were directed at Vinícius Jr. during a Spanish league match at
Sunday (21), the player, in a post on social networks, called the abuse “inhuman” and asked the
sponsors and broadcasters to hold LaLiga accountable.
LaLiga, which is under pressure to do more against racism, said in a statement on Tuesday it felt “powerless” to tackle the problem, while Spanish law limited its actions to just detecting and reporting racist occurrences.
The league listed a number of incidents against black players, including nine against Vinícius, who did not go to trial due to lack of evidence, and called for the law to be changed.
Vinícius has expressed frustration that LaLiga has not exerted pressure on the Spanish federation, which has the power to impose stadium closures and bans, according to sources close to the player.
