For the second consecutive year, the Brazilian women’s goalball team wins the bronze medal in the traditional Malmo Cup, in Sweden, with a victory over the United States, the biggest champion of the tournament, with nine titles. The dispute for third place took place on Sunday (21), with the Brazilians winning by 4 to 2. The gold went to Turkey, which beat Israel by 13 to 9.
“I am very happy to be returning. We managed to adjust our defense and this championship was very important for our preparation, our harmony on the court. For sure, in the next tournaments we will climb to the highest place on the podium”said the wing Carol Duarte, in testimony to the Brazilian Confederation of Sports for the Visually Impaired (CBDV), who had not played for the national team since the Tokyo Paralympics.
Created 23 years ago, the Malmô Cup brought together 10 teams. In addition to Brazil, commanded by coach Gabriel Goulart, the tournament brought together Denmark, Canada, Israel and Ukraine), the group A has the United States, Japan, Great Britain, Turkey and France.
To reach the dispute for the bronze, the selection added four victories, one draw and one defeat. On Friday (19), the Brazilians debuted with a rout over Ukraine (10-0), then drew 7-7 with Israel. The next day, they beat Denmark by 8 to 5 and overcame Canada by 10 to 4. In the semifinal against Turkey – which would later win the title – Brazil was defeated by 7 to 4.
The country’s participation in the Malmö Cup is part of the team’s preparation, which is seeking a place in the Paris Games. There will only be eight teams in the French capital. The selection will have two possibilities to secure the place: the first at the World Games of IBSA (International Federation of Sports for the Blind) in August, in England; and in the Parapan-American, in November, in Chile.
“We are pleased with yet another participation in this very traditional competition”highlighted Goulart. “The best in the world are here, so it’s very important for us to be among them. We were able to put our formations into practice and, in some situations where we were behind on the scoreboard, we reversed and managed the victories. It was great to see the girls unite, the team wanting to play together. This will be fundamental for us to get a place at the Paralympics”concluded the coach.
