The São Paulo Court sentenced councilor Adilson Amadeu (União Brasil) to loss of public office, imprisonment for two years and six months in an open regime and payment of a fine of 13 minimum wages for offenses he committed against the Jewish community in 2020.

An appeal is possible, and the loss of mandate will only happen after the decision becomes final. The current term runs until the end of next year.

At the beginning of 2020, Amadeu sent an audio to friends in which he said: “who is a shameless bitch, that they want to break everyone, for everyone to be left in the hand, from whose group? Unfortunately, also the Jews , when I’m even responding to a process, because when it comes in [o Hospital Israelita] Albert Einstein, Lide group, is the one that has great, great shamelessness, shamelessness of greatness that I have never seen in my life.”

In 2019, four months earlier, Amadeu referred to his then colleague on the São Paulo City Council Daniel Annenberg as a “Jewish son of a bitch” and a “shit Jew” when he saw him vote against a project of his authorship.

For this case, he received a prison sentence in May 2022, which was replaced by community service.

The Public Ministry of São Paulo took legal action against Amadeu, and Conib and Fisesp, entities representing the Jewish community, acted as assistant prosecutors.

In the process, Amadeu said that he apologized to Jewish associations and federations and that he sent the audio at a time when many people were dying in Covid-19 field hospitals and he considered that treatment conditions should be better.

In her decision, judge Renata Catelli, of the 21st Criminal Court, writes that Amadeu managed to “revive ideas known to be anti-Semitic, helping to spread them, stigmatizing the Jewish people.” Because he is a councilor, says the judge, the words resonate differently than the words of an anonymous person and were disseminated through various WhatsApp groups, social networks and websites.

In her decision, the judge also refers to the current context of the Israel-Hamas war and says that at a time when anti-Semitic speeches have resurfaced on a scale unprecedented since the Second World War, in which Jews are accused of controlling the press and governments , in which traders put up posters prohibiting Jews from entering their establishments, behavior like Amadeu’s “cannot be tolerated”.

The councilor’s office states that “the aforementioned process is under judicial secrecy, and therefore any statement regarding its content is prohibited.”
