The state of São Paulo now has a law that establishes the obligation for the Civil Defense to forward disaster alerts to the population through regional radio and TV.

The law was promulgated by governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and published in the state’s Official Gazette on Thursday (21). The proposal appeared in April in the Legislative Assembly and was authored by Bruno Zambelli (PL).

According to the law, which is already in force, disaster alerts received by the state’s Civil Defense must be immediately passed on to the broadcasting media.

Tarcísio vetoed two paragraphs of the bill. The first said that the alerts would be passed on by the media in the “region where the population vulnerable to the monitored extreme weather event is located”. The second vetoed paragraph says that non-disclosure or partial disclosure is “subject to communication to the concession inspection bodies” for the “application of sanctions”.

The governor promised, in February this year, after intense rains that left dozens of people dead on the coast of São Paulo, warning sirens for disasters. According to management, installation can take place by the end of February 2024 in high-risk areas of the state. The beginning of the year is usually marked by rain in the state.

The company that wins the bid in October will have up to 120 days to put the equipment into operation. The investment is R$4.2 million, according to the São Paulo Civil Defense.
