New Secretary of International Relations under Ricardo Nunes (MDB), Aldo Rebelo was the author of a bill that intended to prohibit the use of foreign words in commerce, media, advertising and educational establishments.

He tells the Panel that his 1999 project “is more current than ever” and aimed to “value the teaching and learning of the Portuguese language and protect the language against the abuse of foreign languages”.

“Why replace liquidation or ‘burning’ of popular stores with the pedantic ‘sale’, not to mention ‘delivery, ‘playoffs’, ‘valet parking’, ‘drive thru'”, he wrote in 2001, in Sheet.

“Or should we accept that the currency of globalization (the dollar) imposes, in addition to its monetary schemes, its cultural models and also its linguistic standards?”, he added.

At the time, Rebelo was a federal deputy for PC do B (he is now with PDT).

Originally, the project provided for charging a fine of up to R$14,000 for anyone using foreign words, but that was removed from the text. Another sanction provided was that the offender would be forced to take Portuguese classes.
