The São Paulo City Council approved a bill that changes the name of a street in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, which today honors a bandeirante, to pay homage to an icon of black resistance.

The project, authored by councilor Toninho Vespoli (PSOL), gives the current Jorge Velho street the name Zumbi dos Palmares. Domingos Jorge Velho (1641-1705) was responsible for one of the attacks on Quilombo dos Palmares, a place commanded by Zumbi (1655-95).

The project was forwarded to Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), who could sanction or veto it. When contacted, the city hall did not say what the decision would be.

According to Vespoli, the idea of changing the name of the street came from the management of Faculdade Zumbi dos Palmares, which is located nearby.

“We have already managed to approve projects removing the names of military regime torturers from public streets. Changing the name of a person who persecuted black people with that of Zumbi is a new step in this process of historical reparation”, declares the councilor.

In recent years, the bandeirantes have been identified mainly by the left as harmful historical figures, for persecuting black people and enslaving indigenous people. In 2021, a group set fire to the statue of Borba Gato, in the Santo Amaro neighborhood.
