South Korea striker becomes youngest in history in Women’s Cups – News of Brazil

South Korea striker Casey Phair became the youngest player to play at the World Cup on Tuesday, just 26 days after celebrating her 16th birthday.
The American-born teenager took to the pitch in the 33rd minute of the South Korean team’s 2-0 defeat by Colombia in Sydney, beating the record set by Nigerian Ifeanyi Chiejine, who was 16 years and 34 days old at the 1999 Women’s World Cup.
Tuesday’s group H clash also saw another record broken: the 22 years and 256 days difference between Phair and South Korean goalkeeper Kim Jung-mi represents the biggest age difference between teammates in the history of the Women’s World Cup, according to FIFA.
After Casey Phair made her choice to play for South Korea, coach Colin Bell said it was his duty to protect the teenager from all publicity.
South Korea will face Morocco, in Adelaide, on Sunday (30).
In the men’s World Cups, Norman Whiteside is the youngest player to play in an edition, representing Northern Ireland in 1982, aged 17 years and 41 days.
